In our final week of Humanities-104, we focused on a post-apocalyptic landscape for mankind, one of these being within the world of “28 Days Later”. One of the characters had a quote that really stuck with me after he said it:
Major Henry West : “This is what I’ve seen in the four weeks since infection. People killing people, which is much what I saw in the four weeks before infection, and the four weeks before that, and before that, and as far back as I care to remember. People killing people, which to my mind, puts us in a state of normality right now.”
Interestingly, Major West ends up attempting to do exactly as he had described, as he turns out to be an antagonist and tries to kill the protagonists out of vengeance. I decided to write a haiku with both the Major’s quote and countless violent events throughout human history in mind (some of which we have discussed in class), as there does appear to be more truth in what he said than the characters recognized within the diagesis of 28 Days Later:
“Human Nature”
Before and after,
People killing people still,
A sad normalcy.
